In this tribute I want to share with the readers some of the reasons why I have always considered Richard (Dick) Beckhard my primary mentor. I have had many mentors and am grateful to all of them. They include my PhD thesis advisors Gordon Allport and Richard Solomon at the Harvard Graduate School of Social Relations; Alex Bavelas, a teacher at MIT; David Rioch, a brilliant psychiatrist who was my boss at the Walter Reed Institute of Research; and Douglas McGregor, who brought me to MIT—where I have spent my entire academic career.
