In this chapter, we introduce some of the major recent and future issues for organisations. Many of these issues are due to the changing world of work; for example, what do organisations need to pay attention to as they enter the post-recession era and try to survive in increasingly difficult economic conditions and times of great change?

The world of work is changing dramatically, with more and more restructurings, downsizings, delayerings, mergers and acquisitions, outsourcings, and the use of temporary freelance workers. These changes have brought with them a range of contemporary issues that need exploring.

Indeed, as Machiavelli wrote in The Prince:

It should be borne in mind that there is nothing more difficult to arrange, more doubtful of success, and more dangerous to carry through than initiating change. . . . The innovator makes enemies of all those who prospered under the old order, and only lukewarm support is forthcoming from those who would prosper under the new.
