Drilling Down and Exceptions

There are two important concepts for developing management information systems: exception reporting, and drilling down. Managers are extremely busy people. They do not want to wade through the detail to find the information they need. Managers are most interested in determining the work that is out of variance. This allows them to act on the trouble. Work that is within variance does not require attention. When a manager identifies the problem, additional information is often needed in order to zero in on the exact problem.
