All services we have discussed in the previous chapters share at least one characteristic: they are all synchronous, two-way, request/reply services. This means that consumers of these services are blocked for the duration of the service execution, waiting for a response. There are many situations where a service does not need to return a response, or at least not synchronously. One-way (aka fire and forget) services have operations defined in their interface with an input but no output or fault.
