About the Examples

This book contains many examples, some short and some quite long. For everything but the simplest examples, you’ll find the code shown in the book on the O’Reilly web site (www.oreilly.com/catalog/ordevworkbook). You’ll also find additional examples on the book’s web page that were too long to be included in the hard copy. I’ve included this code to give you a jump-start on writing your own Oracle8i PL/SQL code and to keep you from having to type many pages of PL/SQL statements from printed text.

The examples are provided in two ways:

  • The Companion Utilities Reference for the Oracle PL/SQL Developer’s Workbook, an online tool developed by RevealNet, Inc., gives you point-and-click access to all source code developed for this book. You can use this software in any Microsoft Windows environment (95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000).

  • A simple ZIP file contains the code for all examples. You may prefer this format if you are working in a non-Windows environment or have limited memory or bandwidth.

Throughout the book, web icons (see the Conventions Used in This Book section) indicate that a code example shown or mentioned in the text is included on the web page.

I’ll try to keep the code up to date, incorporating corrections to any errors that are discovered, as well as improvements suggested by readers. For an updated version of the examples, the O’Reilly site.
