The title of this book modestly implies a narrower focus than its content addresses. In the first chapter, the authors actually explain how to understand the end-to-end performance of applications that use Oracle Database to implement their database of record and, in that context, how to understand the optimal top-down architecture of such an application. They show that using PL/SQL, rather than avoiding it altogether, brings a significant performance benefit.
