Foreword

In the history of enterprise computing, there have been several transformations that have fundamentally changed the way we work. In the 1980s, it was the emergence of the PC and the advent of local IP-based networks enabling client-server computing. In the 1990s, the interconnection of these networks formed the commercial Internet and the birth of the Web. The turn of the twenty-first century saw the widespread adoption of service-oriented architectures to simplify the interconnection of complex systems.
