CHAPTER 8 Web Services

THE FIRST THING THAT comes to mind when one thinks of Web Services is the hype surrounding it for the past few years. No discussion on anything in software or even computing is complete without a direct or indirect reference to Web Services.

Lots of excitement and tons of jargon make Web Services appear as if it were something right out of the movies; a mysterious new invention that would change the world forever. Web Services is certainly quite far off from doing anything of that sort. The core idea underlying Web Services is fairly simple. I would put it down as a technology to get diverse systems talking to each other using a straightforward communication technique, adhering to definite rules, and based on XML.
