Foreword
I was recently talking to a developer, wondering how well developers knew their software development tools. He made the point that he was spending more time with his tool than with his wife and therefore felt he had a deep knowledge of it. I thought that was funny until I realized it was probably true. I am not sure what it says about the quality of the relationship between our users and their better halves, but beyond the fiscal responsibility that we have toward our management, our employees, and finally our stock holders, this discussion drove home that there is nothing more daunting than the responsibility we have toward our users and the potential disruption of the relationship they have with their software development tools.
