Default: BYTE

Dynamic: ALTER SYSTEM, ALTER SESSION

Specifies whether CHAR and VARCHAR2 columns are created with byte or character length semantics. Tables created by SYS and SYSTEM always use byte semantics. NCHAR, NVARCHAR, CLOB, and NCLOB columns are always character based. New with Oracle9i.
