When I sat down to write this foreword, it occurred to me that I was having the same experience that almost everyone has who tries to securely deploy a business application—namely, Where on earth do I start? Installing an operating system and locking it down is fairly straightforward, but figuring out how all the pieces of a business application fit together securely—from soup (the operating system) to nuts (the DMZ)—is a task that would cause you to reach for a phalanx of consultants and a bottle of tranquilizers.
