As data becomes more complex, the ability to interpret and understand the data decreases. The ability to take complex information and compress it into a visual form allows quicker understanding of the data and trends within it. Charts are one way to quickly grasp the meaning behind the data.

In the past, charting solutions in web-based applications have been either too static or too expensive computationally to use. In these solutions, either static images of charts were generated and stored periodically, or images were generated for each request. Both of these methods are lacking in usability and yield a poor user experience.
