SNPn—the Job Queue process

This process (called the Snapshot Refresh process in Oracle7) is used when snapshots are implemented in an Oracle database running with the Distributed Option. There may be up to 10 of these processes (SNP0 through SNP9) in Oracle7, and up to 36 (SNP0 through SNP9, SNPA through SNPZ) in Oracle8. The number of SNPn processes is controlled by the INIT.ORA parameter SNAPSHOT_REFRESH_PROCESSES in Oracle7 or JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES in Oracle8. These processes are responsible for automatically refreshing table snapshots, and they wake up periodically to perform this action. If more than one SNPn process is running, the automatic update tasks are shared among the processes. Note that failure of an SNPn process will not cause the instance to fail.
