Data Dictionary Requirements
In order for the cost-based optimizer to function properly, it needs to know the sizes of your database tables and the distribution of data within the columns of those tables. Oracle, unlike some other relational database management systems, does not automatically keep this information. In Oracle, you have to generate the information using the ANALYZE command, which can be used to analyze tables, indexes, and columns, as shown in the following sections.
