Hot backup

When you are running the database in archivelog mode, you can back up the database while it is still running, or hot. By placing each tablespace in backup mode, Oracle can continue to run the database while allowing an operating-system-level backup of the corresponding physical files. Using the information stored in the log files, Oracle is able to access the physical backups of database files taken while the database is running and can roll transactions forward to a consistent point in time.
