Buffer Busy Waits/Block Contention

This particular subject has been covered extensively in almost every Oracle tuning book and in many articles and whitepapers since time immemorial. In Oracle 8i OPS days, reducing data block contention (mainly during inserts) was possible using FREELISTS and FREELIST GROUPS. If application designers, developers, and DBAs are able to work out the correct settings for these two parameters, it is still a valid and effective approach to reduce contention for data blocks significantly as well as segment header waits in Oracle RAC environments when concurrent inserts are used.
