Oracle Real Application Clusters can be used to scale most database applications— from custom to commercial off-the-shelf (COTS). An application that runs on a single-instance environment can be directly ported to the Oracle RAC platform without needing any major architecture or code changes when it is designed optimally, and almost all packaged applications can be ported to Oracle RAC when scalability or availability of the application is in question.
