Extended Oracle RAC configurations are very special within the clustering technologies, with the member nodes spread across geographic locations. The “speed of light” factor plays the most important role in the latency between member nodes and puts a practical limitation on the distance between the nodes. Approximately 1 millisecond of latency is introduced for every 50 miles, which limits the extended clusters to being less than a few hundred miles apart.
