Introduction to Backups

One of the key features of the Oracle RDBMS engine is its ability to recover from various kinds of faults, disasters, and human errors. The Oracle backup and recovery mechanism has evolved since its early days of Oracle 6 into a near “fault-tolerant” database engine that can guarantee data protection as well as recoverability more than any other database vendor’s product. Transaction recovery is possible mainly due to the redo log. The structure of the redo log and its associated buffer has undergone changes since the days of Oracle 6 when it was first introduced, but it largely remains the same, and its primary purpose and importance inside Oracle both remain.
