Enabling the Flashback Area

Oracle Database 10g Release 1 introduced the flashback area to roll back the database to a time in the recent past. A flashback log is different from an archive log and is kept in a separate location specified by flashback log location.

The procedure for enabling the flashback is similar to the procedure for enabling the archiving log mode—it requires the database to be mounted in the exclusive mode. If you attempt to enable flashback while mounted/open in shared mode, Oracle will signal an error.

The following steps enable the database’s flashback mode. This can be done from any node.
