Initialization Parameters

Oracle is a highly flexible, function-rich RDBMS that can be used on a laptop by a single user or used on the world’s most powerful computer systems and accessed by thousands of users. How does Oracle offer such flexibility? How does an end user choose which functions to use and optimize the database for the intended use? The answers lie in Oracle’s parameter file, which contains a set of parameters that allow an end user to customize and optimize an Oracle database instance. When an Oracle instance starts, it reads these parameters, which in turn define the features the database uses, the amount of memory an instance uses, how users interact with the database, and other important information.
