Automatic Storage Management (ASM) was a new feature in Oracle Database 10g Release 1 that revolutionized the way Oracle and the Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) DBA managed database files. For the Database, ASM combines volume management with the concept of Oracle managed files to allow the MAA DBA to create a database comprising data files that are self-managed, plus the I/O is automatically balanced among available disks. In Oracle Database 11g Release 2, ASM has moved out of the database and provides a volume driver to create volumes that utilize ASM disk groups.
