CHAPTER 6ASMLIB Concepts and Overview
Early in the design of ASM, Oracle decided that an alternative to the standard operating system interface for device management, disk discovery, and provisioning was considered necessary and that this mechanism needed to be easily integrated into ASM. The core concept was to produce a storage management interface API, called ASMLIB. This API enables storage and operating system (OS) vendors to supply a plug-in library to extend the vendors' storage-related features and exploit their storage array strengths and capabilities. ASMLIB is not required to run ASM; it is simply an add-on module that simplifies the management and discovery of ASM disks.
