Summary

In this chapter, we have thoroughly discussed how the Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) feature simplifies database datafile management, and the benefits provided by using it. We have also covered the 11g R1 and 11g R2 feature enhancements in great detail. We have discussed how to manage an ASM instance using ASMCA and the functionality and usage of ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM), ASM Cluster File System (ACFS), and ASM Snapshot technology. Additionally, we discussed how to place the data that is accessed more frequently on the edge of disk spindles to gain increased performance. Towards the end of this chapter, we also covered the topic of ASM backup and restore strategies.
