Chapter 8. Optical Formats: Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), and Gigabit Ethernet

Information technology (IT) executives face a number of challenges as they attempt to deliver optical network services that provide clear competitive advantages for their enterprises. Many of these challenges are a result of the limitations associated with today's metro optical network technology. These include escalating costs as optical networks become more complex and hard to manage, access bottlenecks brought about by bandwidth-hungry applications coupled with prohibitive bandwidth pricing, and delays in implementing new services due to the highly distributed nature of today's computing networks.

This chapter provides an overview of how enterprises can utilize managed optical formats such as SONET, SDH, and gigabit Ethernet. Optical formats are used by enterprises to obtain the high-capacity, scalable bandwidth necessary to transform IT into a competitive advantage, speeding transactions, slashing lead times, and ultimately, enhancing employee productivity and the overall success of the entire enterprise.
