The process in which a part of the information carried in a channel is demodulated (dropped) at an intermediate point and different information is modulated (added) on to the channel for subsequent transmission.

ADM (add/drop multiplexer).

Digital multiplexing equipment that adds and drops traffic in an optical network. The ADM also acts as a digital cross-connect switch.

AIS (alarm indicating signal).

A code sent downstream indicating that an upstream failure has occurred. SONET defines the following four categories of AIS: Line AIS, STS path AIS, VT path AIS, and DS-N AIS.
