Wavelength-Division Multiplexing Systems

WDM optical networks consist of five main components:

  • Transmitters

  • Optical multiplexers and demultiplexers

  • Amplifiers

  • Optical-fiber media

  • Receivers

The various WDM components are integrated to form WDM systems. This section introduces a typical WDM node and then proceeds to explain the various subsystems and their relevant technologies in greater detail.
