An Introduction to Time-Division Multiplexing

A medium can natively carry only one signal at any moment in time. For multiple signals to share a medium, the medium must somehow be divided, giving each signal a portion of the total bandwidth. The current techniques that can accomplish this include time-division multiplexing (TDM), frequency-division multiplexing (FDM), code-division multiple access (CDMA), and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Variations of these four multiplexing techniques are used in data transmission systems.
