13.2. Information Models

It was stated earlier that telecommunications management is about configuring, monitoring, and trouble-shooting telecommunication services and equipment. Given that there is a plethora of different types of telecommunications equipment and services, any approach for standardizing the management process needs to start with a basic model of the equipment or the service to be managed. Such models are typically referred to as information models. These models in the past have been associated with specific management protocols. The trend in recent years has been to separate these models from particular management protocols and to describe them in a protocol-independent manner.
