10.10. Summary

In this chapter we described intradomain optical routing. Specifically, we discussed the difference between intradomain IP and optical routing. We then discussed different requirements that are specific to optical networks and optical routing. We also covered extensions to OSPF necessary to handle optical routing in a single area. State of the art in multiarea OSPF extension was addressed next followed by a brief discussion of the performance impact due to these extensions. Although a single routing protocol base (i.e., OSPF) for multiarea, intradomain routing was considered in this chapter, the general issue of interdomain routing in a heterogeneous environment is examined in Chapter 12.
