5.7. Summary

In this chapter, we described the formal architectural models for the optical control plane and gave an overview of its components. The control plane supports neighbor discovery, distributed routing, and signaling for connection provisioning and restoration. While the optical control plane protocols are predominantly IP and MPLS based, the ATM P-NNI protocols have also been adopted for optical network control. The following chapters describe these protocol components in detail.
