7.1 Introduction

In the last 10 years multimode fiber and short-wave VCSELs have emerged as dominant technologies for short-reach high data rate networks [1]. Multimode glass optical fibers are used in networks, in office buildings, and in data centers where data rates and/or lengths are higher than can be met with copper networks, and the use of VCSELs makes the overall system cost low enough to enable widespread adoption.
