Operations research is the study of optimisation techniques. It is applied to decision theory. The existence of optimisation techniques can be traced at least to the days of Newton and Lagrange. Rapid development and invention of new techniques have occurred since the Second World War, essentially because of the necessity to win the war with limited resources. There has been a long-felt need for a simple book on operations research covering the syllabi of Indian universities.
