21.9. Location databases for mobile objects

Users and their computers may be mobile. Technology such as wireless networks and high bandwidth wireless ATM networks have opened up design issues for systems to accommodate mobility, for example:

  • It should be possible to plug a computer into any network and to continue working as normal. This may involve locating files and accessing services such as mail and news.

  • It should be possible for a mobile user to make use of the network-based computers located wherever he or she might be.

  • As a user moves around a work environment, relevant environment objects might move with the user. This is a more futuristic scenario; for example, you are taking part in a multimedia conference. You wear a locator object ...
