6.7. Network-based file servers
The previous sections have presented principles that are relevant to filing systems in general: for single-user workstations, centralized time-sharing systems or distributed systems. We now focus on the additional special properties of network-based filing systems.
We are not concerned here with how network communication is invoked between the client and the service. We shall discuss this later in Chapter 16. Neither are we concerned with how a number of file server machines work together to provide a service. That is the concern of a more advanced course on distributed operating systems such as Tanenbaum and van Steen (2002) or Coulouris et al. (2001).
