The field of database is large and, in this integrated approach to software systems design, we have focused on object data modelling, transaction processing, concurrency control, recovery, distribution and the requirements a database system imposes on the underlying operating system. We have not studied earlier approaches to data modelling and query language design. A very brief historical development is given here but a specialist database text should be consulted for background reading (Date, 1995; Korth and Silberschatz, 1991).
