Appendix. Evolution of computer systems

A.1 Evolution and exploitation of technology

A.2 Operating systems and distributed operating systems

A.3 Databases

A.4 Concurrency control

Since system design is technology-driven an outline of technological developments is given below. The development of hardware, computer systems and networks is included. Technology must be exploited, first in research projects and, when feasibility is demonstrated, in commercial products. The formation of selected major companies and software products is therefore included. The data below is based on the timeline created by the IEEE Computer Society for their 50th anniversary in 1996. See IEEE (1996) and http://www.computer.org/history/ for further reading.
