A reliable NNM system takes advantage of mirrored disks. Downtime is minimized by adopting the following procedure. First, pause or shut down the NNM subsystem. Next, break the disk mirror, then restart NNM, which is now running without active mirroring. Back up the volumes on the inactive mirror disk, and when it’s done, establish the mirror again, which automatically silvers the active disk onto the one just backed up. Since hard drive storage is so economical, some system administrators create triple mirrors for added reliability.
