Appendix B

Op Amp Noise Theory

B.1 Introduction

The subject of op amp noise is a complex enough topic that it deserves its own appendix. The purpose of op amp circuitry is the manipulation of the input signal in some fashion. Unfortunately, in the real world, the input signal has unwanted noise superimposed on it.

This discussion of noise is highly theoretical and a bit esoteric. Noise is primarily a function of the semiconductor process used to make an op amp (and the materials used to make passive components). Therefore, there is little, if anything, you can do to eliminate it, other than trying to find different parts until you find one that has acceptable noise limits the way you are going to use it. I have amassed many tidbits of information ...
