Freedom of Speech
Americans hold freedom of speech as important as taking a breath. Speech is scrutinized from every angle. The Internet is unique. It's probably the first communication tool involving freedom of speech without needing freedom of assembly.
One-on-one communication (talking on the telephone or writing letters) has traditionally been a universal way for citizens to communicate. Until now, communication from one to many has been reserved for public gatherings or for publishers, news bureaus, television stations, and other mass media. Although these may claim to speak on behalf of the people, they do not assure that all voices or opinions are heard.
