Staging and Production
A concept common to both Web development and content management is the practice of using a staging server and a production server (sometimes referred to as the live server). Directly editing a live Web site is a risky proposition. If mistakes are made, those accessing the site instantaneously see them. A better practice is to have a Web site “scratch pad” where changes are tested out before going live.
The staging server is a Web server (just like the live Web server) except that it is not accessible to the outside world. Many Web developers will make changes and test their Web sites on the staging server. Once the changes are ready for deployment, they are copied to the live server.
