Chapter 19. Handhelds, Phones, and PDAs
Back in the late 1980s and the early 1990s, your choice of PC was limited to a desktop MS-DOS or Apple Mac. There were early luggable machines (weighing 10–12 lbs) that were called “portable” (a joke, in retrospect). As the size and weight of these machines decreased, they were called laptops and notebook computers.
Computing technology evolved. Computers became smaller and more portable. In 1988, Sharp introduced the Wizard, which featured a small LCD screen and a tiny keyboard. The Wizard was marketed as a replacement for paper-based appointment calendars and address books, and supplemented the PC.
