Draw out a plan of your home. Note where the modem/residential gateway and PCs will be located; you will be on your way to deciding which technology to purchase. The following notes provide more background and suggestions for detailing your picture or technology blueprint.

Some Network Considerations

When mapping out your home network, consider the following questions as a starting point.

  • Where will I locate my modem or residential gateway that connects to the Internet?

  • How many PCs can I locate in the same room as that modem or residential gateway?

  • How many PCs do I want to locate in other rooms?

  • Are there any immobile objects to be dealt with?

  • Is there a phone jack in that room?

  • Will I want to move my notebook computers ...
