So there are your options. Now what? Well, do you know exactly what you want? That's a serious question. You don't have to be an expert on the product you want to buy, but you should know enough not to fall for a deal that's too good to be true.

First things first: Go to the manufacturer's site and gather specific data on the item you're considering. While you are at it, here are some questions to ponder:

  • Why are you buying this item? What's its purpose?

  • Do you need a specialized product or will a more generic, economical one do?

  • If there are multiple product lines and models to choose from, how do they differ?

  • From a component standpoint, why is one model more expensive than another?

  • When do you need it? If you can wait, you'll pay ...
