Recognizing True Influence

True social media influence is impossible to measure. There are infinite approaches to measuring different aspects that may well add up to something interesting, but nothing you discover via any listening platform can top doing a little manual searching around for the following kinds of activities.

Speaking at conferences

Check this person’s site or social media platforms to see if he has spoken at any conferences within the past year or two. He gets bonus points for keynoting. Pay attention to the venues where he speaks. I’ve keynoted for conferences with hundreds of people in Las Vegas and New York City, but I’ve also given intimate little seminars to 30 people crammed in a room.

Take a look at what kind of conference she is addressing. If your brand is all about macramé potholders and your brand promoter is presenting at a macramé convention, you’ve got a serious gem of a follower!

Authoring books

Have a look at his site and social profiles to see if he has authored any books. Although indie publishing is gaining popularity, you can be sure that if he has written a book that’s been published by a traditional publisher, he has been thoroughly checked out as having influence and being known as an expert in his field.
