Taking Advantage of Trends

Trends aren’t just for music or the stock market. Suppose you’re a fancy florist in a large city. Suppose also that a starlet wore a dress made from red carnations to the Academy Awards ceremony, and suddenly red carnations are a fashion rage. You’d want to get in on this trend, right?

You could just stock more red carnations and put up a catchy red-carnation display in your front window. You’d get more business, sure, but what about the online customers who order from you for local deliveries? Unless you’re communicating this red carnation trend online, you’re most definitely missing out.

Here’s what you do.

1. Update your site with text that talks about “red carnations” right up there in the title, such as “Flashy Fern’s Red Carnation Specials”.

2. Write blog posts featuring discussions about red carnations. Include captioned pictures.

3. Share your blog posts on Twitter and Facebook.

4. Create a red-carnation–related promotion.

The possibilities here are endless: People who mention your clever red carnation designs on Twitter, Pinterest, or Facebook receive a 20% discount, for example. Or anyone who shares a photograph of her purchase from your shop with her online audience receives a coupon for a discount on her next purchase. Just have fun with it!!
