The process of data word transmission on an on-chip bus leads to switching activity of data bits on the bus wires, which charges and discharges the capacitance associated with the wires and consequently leads to dynamic power dissipation, as discussed in Chapter 5. The effective capacitance associated with a wire is made up of not only the ground capacitance of the wire itself (self-capacitance), but also the coupling capacitance and coupling inductance due to switching activity on the adjacent wires.
