SECTION TWOThe MVPs of Performance Success

So how do you silence the inner critic?

Knowing some basic tricks of the trade may not completely silence the inner critic, but they can at least help you turn down the volume.

I based the MVPs of Performance Success covered in this book on my more than two decades of experience spent in front of a camera. They serve as a way to categorize the wide array of techniques you can employ while communicating through a camera. As mentioned in Chapter 1, the acronym MVP in this technique refers to the Mental, Vocal, and Physical elements of performance, and all of these need to be working in concert to maximize your impact.

This section will go over each element in detail and highlight potential pitfalls along with proven solutions. It is divided into the following three chapters:

  • Chapter 3: M—Mental Mind-Set: The Prep before the Performance
  • Chapter 4: V—Vocal Variety: Pacing and Pausing with Purpose
  • Chapter 5: P—Physical Factors: On-Camera Movement with Meaning
