The rich, versatile art of oil painting has captivated artists for centuries and continues to be one of the most favored painting mediums. Oil paints first became popular during the Renaissance, replacing sticky, fast-drying tempera paints as the prevalent medium. In contrast to tempera, oil paints dried slowly, which allowed the artist to mix colors directly on a support and to work on several different areas of a painting at once—techniques that are still widely used in oil painting today.
