Applying Direct Formatting to Text and Objects

To make text or objects appear the way you want them, you apply formatting to them. For example, to make text appear the way you want it, you can change the font it uses, change the font size, apply bold or italic, and so on.

Each of the Office programs provides a wide range of direct formatting—formatting that you apply directly to text or an object. Word, Outlook, Excel, an OneNote also provide styles, collections of formatting that you can apply in a single click.

TIP: When working in Word, Outlook, Excel, or OneNote, use styles whenever possible instead of using direct formatting. By using styles, you can apply formatting far faster than by using direct formatting, and you can more easily keep ...
